WHY LIGHT THE SELMA BRIDGE?

It has never been properly lit before. Illuminating the Bridge will:

• Bring deserved recognition to the history of a pivotal moment in the struggle for Voting Rights

• Build community pride through the bridge as a nighttime destination

• Engage the community through educational efforts around the lighting project

• Further community development goals as the illuminated bridge becomes a destination and driver for increased downtown activity.

Honor the Past.
Shine for the Future.

PRESERVING HISTORY

The Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, is a National Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As the site of the events of Bloody Sunday and the subsequent March to Montgomery in 1965, the bridge is a powerful symbol of the struggle for voting rights.

LIGHTING SELMA

By illuminating the bridge with programmable LED lighting, we can accomplish so many things at once: Recognizing those who sacrificed for voting rights, bringing new focus to historic events, celebrating the progress we’ve made so far, and helping the community build civic pride and attract new economic activity to downtown Selma.

WE’RE ALMOST THERE

The equipment, the legal permitting, the design, and a budget for a sustainable future—it’s all been secured thanks to generous sponsors including HLB Lighting, Parsons, Baribizon Lighting, ETC Lighting, Lumenpulse, and others. The City of Selma has officially approved the lighting project and the Alabama Department of Tourism has has offered its support.
